Political ActionEverything that happens at SUNY Stony Brook is decided by the NYS legislators and the governor. Your involvement in the political process influences our elected officials. Make your voice heard.Advocacy for SUNY in Albany UUPers in large numbers brought the union's call for more funding for SUNY to the Albany offices of more than 70 legislators on Tuesday, February 26. Ninety members from chapters from across the state included 15 from our SB HSC Chapter walked to the State Legislative Office Building and pressed lawmakers and their staffers for more state dollars for SUNY and to support the union's effort to keep SUNY Downstate Medical Center a fully functioningstate-run public hospital. What about LICH? LICH, the Long Island College Hospital, was acquired by Brooklyn Downstate Medical only to have its campus president recommend that the facility be closed. On February 8, 2013 Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher presented that recommendation at a meeting of the SUNY Board of Trustees. To read more about this recommendation CLICK HERE The facility will remain open (and probably continue losing money) until the DOH acts to approve the closure. There is speculation that the DOH will not allow the closure, but only time will tell. UUP has members working at both Brooklyn Downstate and at LICH. What about Southampton Hospital? Have you heard that STONY BROOK MEDICINE and SOUTHAMPTON HOSPITAL have taken a major step toward a stronger partnership?
